Social Media- The Not-So-New Marketing Source

Social media has come around like a hurricane force buzzword in the past few years.

So what’s the big deal?

From it’s beginning days of what was My Yearbook (or whatever it was called) to Myspace and now Facebook (and about 100 others…) social media is pretty new. BUT the concept behind it, isn’t so new, in fact, it is a centuries old marketing technique  From the beginning of the merchant lead world people have relied on word of mouth and the social “clout” of the speaking party to influence their purchasing decisions.

So, some would say marketing has changed, evolved over time, but I think the very core of it still exists. People talk. People listen other people’s opinions when they are in a position of authority or influence in the persons life.

Whether it be a political figure, parent or friend, the people we associate with have a influence over us, and we have an influence over them. Why else would we ask for their opinions or regard them so heavily when making choices? Why else would reviews be so important to service type businesses? (Don’t believe me? Check out the popularity of sites like Yelp and Angie’s List…)

So what does this tell us?

Social Media has opened us up to the very core of what our marketing was trying to reach to begin with. We no longer have to wait for someone to see us on an ad, be brought up in a conversation we have no control over, and then hope someone will take action on it. All of that has been put in the marketers hands!

Say you post a picture of an adorable puppy eating a treat from your company and Ben “likes” said picture. Ben may have “liked” the picture because the dog was cute, or he likes your product, or he simply has a crush on someone at your company (ha) but the point is, all of his friends now see that he “liked” your picture, therefore he “likes” your product. His mere act of clicking a button has created exponential cloud of influence for your company.

But it doesn’t stop there! Ben’s friend Jessica see’s that he likes your pictures and clicks on your name. She then “likes” your page, receiving a free coupon, or some other promotional item, and her friends then see your name across their screen.

Even further than that, your name is now in her email box, for selecting that “deal” and she has a direct link to purchase that item! Did you know that the average spent shopping online from a link on Facebook is just over $100? Imagine, that image, “liked” by 10 people, seen by each of their 50-300 friends..

How many sales could have that day or the next, just by running a very inexpensive social media campaign?

Generations X and Y, they rely on the social media realm to provide their suggestions and research before purchasing an item.

How much revenue is your company missing out on from these two generations by sticking to old campaigns built for baby boomers and their older children?

Social Media, don’t ignore it. Or your company may become as obsolete as Yahoo! and AOL are to 20 year olds.

It’s a mystery… Quilt.

A few weeks ago my best friend Fifi had a great idea. When I say great, I might actually mean crazy. Yes, crazy, that’s the right word. It started with this little gem arriving on the front seat of my car…Scary Directions..

$40 later, I am enrolled for this class. This coming January 26th at 8am, I will join her at Good Sheppard for a day of sewing this. Fifi and I took a trip to Craft Warehouse and picked up a beautiful Jelly Roll of mod fabric and a beautiful button theme background.

Next came the directions… I’ve never seen something so complicated in my life! Oh my goodness. Even the name of the quilt seems to be “All Tangled Up”, boy does that sound accurate! “A” fabric should contrast “B” fabric and “M” should contrast “A” and “B” while “C” should only contrast “B”…  I got a little graph to put scraps of the fabric on, to keep track of which fabric is which letter. (Does this sound as crazy to you as me?!) So I put them all in little stacks, to get them in their “neighborhoods”, as instructed.

This is where we are at now:

The strips on the left are to be all sewn together in 3 groups of 10 each… then the squares in the middle are to be cut into about 10 different size squares and strips before the class on the 26th. Between my full time job, new workouts and career goals, this will be close to a miracle if i complete it! ha! Wish me luck and I’ll post more about the process soon!

2013… The Year of Intention

Image

So, we’re a mere 11 days into 2013. The past month in my life has been filled with a lot of feelings of unease, dissatisfaction and wanting for change. Just before Christmas I set myself some pretty lofty goals.

To list a few:

1. Jog/Run a 5k by end of summer (no easy feat for my whole 202 lb body, let me tell you.)

2. Launch a career in Web Development and Social Media Marketing (at which point I knew nothing beyond a few HTML codes I used back in the MySpace days… Let’s not get started there…)

3. Take control. Follow through. Get Involved. Live life more IN life. Just BE a better person for my kids, myself and my family.

4. Establish and maintain a healthy eating regime. NO MORE CARB OVERLOADS. (mostly lol)

5. Spend more quality time with both my kids, they are just growing too dang fast.
I don’t want to call these resolutions, as they have been on my mind and heart for many months now and in the process for just as many. However, 2013 is going to be MY year and NOTHING is going to hold me back.

Three weeks after setting these goals I have lost 4 lbs, made it to the gym 2x a week (not ideal but I’m getting there!), taken several courses in CSS & HTML 5, purchased a domain and established hosting for an on-line portfolio, sought out two new first time clients for my portfolio, and spent time hiking with, playing with, and just enjoying my kids.

So, this is me inviting you to join me in my goals, my trails, my challenges. My motivation to change my life is high and I cannot wait to be well on my way and see the physical changes that are to come.

Please join along, and if you wish, share your goals with me! I’m going to need all the motivation I can get!
